How Del Monte Automated Label Inspection Using Machine Vision
In food production, correct product labeling plays a critical role. A single labeling error can lead not only to logistical complications but also to potential health risks for consumers or significant penalties from retail chains.
A case study from our partner Zebra Technologies describes a solution developed in collaboration with Tensor ID and deployed at the food manufacturer Del Monte Foods. The result is a system capable of inspecting every can on the production line in real time.
Production Challenge: High-Speed Line with Zero Tolerance for Errors
At the Del Monte production facility, more than 1,000 cans of vegetables pass along the conveyor every minute. At this speed, any form of manual inspection becomes practically impossible.
Labeling errors can have serious consequences:
-
incorrect label applied to a product
-
unreadable or incorrect codes
-
mismatch between the product and its packaging
Such situations may lead to product recalls, financial penalties, or damage to brand reputation.
The objective was therefore to implement a system capable of ensuring automated, 100% verification of product labeling.
The Solution: Combining Machine Vision and Industrial Scanning
The solution designed by Tensor ID uses a combination of Zebra technologies:
-
Zebra FS40 Fixed Industrial Scanner
-
Zebra CV60 Machine Vision Camera
-
Aurora Focus
-
Aurora Design Assistant
-
TensorVision360 software
The entire system performs automated label inspection in three stages.
-
First, the Zebra CV60 machine vision camera verifies the so-called variety code printed on each can before the label is applied.
-
Next, the FS40 fixed industrial scanner checks the accuracy and readability of the label on every can.
-
In the final stage, the system verifies that multipacks prepared for shipment contain products with the correct codes and labels.
This ensures that every product leaving the production line is properly labeled.
Automation that Simplifies Operators’ Work
Modern Zebra cameras automatically compensate for focus and aperture settings, eliminating the need for operators to manually adjust optics or perform complex calibrations.
All adjustments can be made digitally through the Aurora Focus interface, significantly simplifying system operation.
Automation also enables:
-
faster switching between production runs
-
reduced administrative workload
-
lower risk of human error
In addition, the system is integrated with the Manufacturing Execution System (MES), allowing automated management of data and configurations.
Real-World Benefits
Following the deployment of the system, Del Monte achieved several significant improvements:
-
100% inspection of all labels and codes
-
significant reduction in manual system interventions
-
fewer errors caused by human factors
-
fewer production interruptions
-
improved workplace safety due to reduced manual interaction with equipment
The result is a more stable production process, lower operational costs, and the assurance that every product meets the required quality standards.
A Reference We Work With as Well
This case study demonstrates how Zebra Technologies solutions can perform in real manufacturing environments.
At AMV Technology, we work with these technologies on a long-term basis. We test them, design solutions around them, and integrate them into production lines according to the specific needs of our customers.
If you are dealing with label verification, code readability, or automated packaging inspection, we would be happy to explore how a similar solution could be implemented in your production environment.
